Puerto Banus, Marbella

Puerto Banus is a marina and resort town 6 kilometers south west of Marbella in the autonomous Andalucia region of Spain. The closest major airport is in Malaga, 60 kilometers away.

Known as a play ground for the world’s rich and famous, Puerto Banus is the place to go to if you want to catch a glimpse of the most expensive yachts in the world docked on the marina. Its total surface area is 37 acres with depth ranging between 3 and 6 meters. The marina has berths that can accommodate more than 900 boats. Some of the berths are dedicated to among the wealthiest people on the planet including the King of Saudi Arabia.

Designed and built in 1970 by the architect Jose Banus (and hence its name), it attracts about 5 million visitors each year. Majority of visitors are drawn from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait as well as Spanish tourists.

Away from the sea front, the resort has several high end bars, restaurants, night clubs, casinos and luxury stores. Luxury brands with stores on Puerto Banus streets include BVLGARI, Christian Dior, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana and Versace.

Among the best known sections of the resort is a stretch dubbed ‘the Golden Mile’ – at any time of day, it is populated by luxury cars such as Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Rolls Royce. El Corte Ingles, Spain’s largest department store chain has a large store at Puerto Banus. The Aloha Golf Club is 3 kilometers inland from the marina.

One of the defining landmarks at the resort is Hotel Marbella Club. Set up in 1954, it is one of the most expensive hotels in the world and often considered the best hotel on the entire Costa del Sol. It is a complex of suites and bungalows separated by tropical gardens and with a prime location along the beach.

Given its diverse international clientele, there is a restaurant in Puerto Banus for almost all major world cuisines – Persian, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Turkish and of course Spanish. Its most famous night clubs include Olivia Valere and China White. The Ocean Club and the Buddha Beach Bar are two of the best known bars at the resort.

The mountains in the distance and the scenic views of the ocean provide the ideal environment for you to kick back and relax. The climate of the area has been one of the main drivers Puerto Banus for its ascent into being one of the world’s top exclusive locations. It is shielded from extreme weather by the mountain range to the north and thus has an average annual temperature of 18C.
